Who should attend a support group?
We encourage post-operative patients to attend a support group regularly. OurĀ support groups
are open to patients from other programs and are designed to promote the well-being of all surgery patients. Since the needs of the pre-operative patient differ from those who have had the procedure, support groups are not open to prospective patients.
Also, due to the adult-oriented topics and personal discussions which can occur at these meetings, we cannot accommodate children under 14. Please be sure to make child care arrangements before planning to attend a support group.
Before and After Weight Loss Surgery
Having a good support system after bariatric surgery is very important to your success. Attending support group is an integral part of the successful weight loss experience. Support group has a positive and significant impact on patients. In support groups, you will find other patients who are willing to support, counsel, and befriend you, so you may reach your goals.
Although you may have a wealth of family and friends who are going to support you through your weight loss surgery, there is nothing better than to network with others who have lived through these experiences. Most patients develop lifelong relationships that extend past regular support group meetings, and are contacting each other frequently by phone, email, and casual get-togethers.
Support group is so important that patients must attend meetings before their surgery and should continue after surgery. Support group meetings provide education, support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement, and, ultimately, help patients achieve success faster than they could do alone.
