Houston Obesity Advocate
To Rescue Guam Super Obese
uam and weighs an estimated 1,000 pounds, contacted Ms. Flores after learning about her from a series of TV shows on Discovery Health Channel and the TLC channel. Ms. Flores, who has developed a worldwide reputation for helping the super obese, is regularly seen on such shows as Half Ton Mom, Half Ton Dad, and Half Ton Son. These programs chronicle the work it takes for Angie and the team of doctors, do to help the obese regain their health and life through major weight loss and surgical intervention.
10 years ago Ms. Flores weighed more than 310 pounds and decided to get bariatric surgery. She has lost over 180 pounds and today she devotes her life to helping people who suffer from the disease of obesity. While most of her clients are adults her real mission is to help families whose children suffer from obesity.
“It is well known that obesity is at epidemic levels” noted Ms. Flores and our children are in the most serious shape. Food is such a part of our culture and we relate feeding our children to showing our great love for them. But invariably we are over feeding them and this is not good.”
To help focus attention on the challenge, Ms. Flores established a non-profit organization, Give Obesity the Boot, (www.GiveObesityTheBoot.org) to help educate parents and children about obesity.
“Working with the super obese is not without its risks”, said Ms. Flores, “Ricky’s case is an extreme one, and we are going to help him regain his health and his happiness. It is our hope that Ricky’s case will focus more public attention on the epidemic of obesity in our society and inspire our families to stop and reconsider what we are doing to our kids and our future.”
Ms. Flores has been coaching Mr. Naputi on dieting and starting to gradually lose weight so that he can build his body to undergo the bariatric surgery. Ms. Flores they have been coordinating and putting together the resources and a medical team to help Mr. Naputi.
“Guam is a tropical island paradise of 200,000 inhabitants and there is no medical expertise to handle obesity cases such as Ricky’s” explains Ms. Flores. “Here in
In addition a British production company is doing a documentary on the efforts to help Ricky regain his health and to be an inspiration for those who suffer from obesity.”
I very much appreciate the support the First Lady, Michelle Obama, is giving in bringing childhood obesity to the public’s consciousness. I am looking forward to the opportunity of sitting down with her one day to discuss how we can triumph over this disease. In the meantime, I am hoping that cases like Ricky’s will also advance our cause.”
