I’m a woman who once weighed 310 pounds. I suffered with the disease of obesity for 37 years; through childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood. I didn't understand why I was obese. I didn't feel that I ate more than anyone else. It seemed that I would just look at food and gain weight. Being obese, I suffered from co-morbidities, much the same as any other obese person.

On April 17, 2002, at 11:30 a.m., at the age of 37, I had to have surgical intervention. I underwent RNY Gastric Bypass surgery.  It’s been eight years since I had my surgery, and I have lost 180 pounds and have gained control of my health, weight and life! It has been far from easy, but the rewards have been immeasurable.  As wonderful as that sounds, even to my ears, I must say I have gained so much more than I have lost. I have gained my health, confidence, self-esteem, and, best of all, I feel like a woman.
